There have been many books written about the Wright brothers, thus, we can all see the type of aircraft they flew, how long it flew for, and how high it went. Everything you want to know about the Wright brothers and their first flight is out there for us to read. However, the same cannot be said for the origins of paper aircraft.
Don't you wonder what the first ever paper aircraft looked like, and who made it? Even more of a mystery is how long ago was it made and how far advanced was it for its time?
According to some of the very little research out there that I could find, the Chinese stand the best chance of being the first inventors of the paper aircraft. But we don't know WHEN they first invented the paper aircraft. (Can't really call it a paper airplane because there was no such thing back then - whenever "then" was!) The Chinese were the first to use paper and they were also major kite builders and flyers many hundreds of years ago.
One reason the Chinese are considered the favorites in creating the first paper aircraft, is that a large number of kites, both todya's and those of years ago, have the same basic shape as a paper airplane. Paper aircraft of most kinds can actually fly like kites if rigged in the correct way; all you need is a little sewing cotton, some tape and a long paper tail.
There is a very interesting historical fact in a wonderful old book called “The Great International Paper Airplane Book” by Jerry Mander, George Dippel, and Howard Gossage. The authors referred to a “Capt. Fear God Bascomb,” who is reputed to have brought the first known pad of lined 8 1⁄2" x 11" paper all the way from China on May 1, 1743.
There must have been paper coming out of China before 1743 – not made up as a pad, but as loose sheets (the pure building material that we require). So, can't you imagine some little boy or girl playing around and folding the paper and suddenly, a gust of wind grabs it and sends it flying? It could have happened.
